Public Funding, Private Profits: Public Heath, Infectious Disease and the Case for Medicare 4 All
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown many people the role of public health in their daily lives, and how important public health infrastructure is for the health and safety people in the U.S. and around the globe. And yet the privatization of health care adversely impacts public health, especially in the face of infectious disease outbreaks and full-on pandemics. This session will explore the links between biomedical research, public health and health care systems and by using COVID-19, HIV, and other infectious diseases, make the case for Medicare 4 All as central to a robust and effective public health system.

LIVE: House Oversight Committee Hearing on Medicare for All
Washington D.C. (March 24, 2022)— On Tuesday, March 29, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. ET, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, will hold a hybrid hearing to evaluate the need for reforms that would expand access to affordable health care by taking significant strides toward universal coverage—including proposals to establish a national, single-payer health insurance program, such as Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s Medicare for All Act.

Historically marginalized communities in the United States—including people of color, people with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, people in rural communities, and people with less income—are uninsured and underinsured at disproportionate rates.

Congressional Democrats have enacted sweeping policies like the Affordable Care Act and the American Rescue Plan, which expanded access to affordable health care coverage to millions of people in the United States, and continue to champion policies that will build upon this progress—including by guaranteeing access to public coverage to every person in the United States.

This hearing will assess how uninsurance and underinsurance negatively impacts health outcomes and examine how moving toward universal coverage could advance health equity in the United States.  The hearing will also evaluate reforms that would expand access to affordable health care and move our nation toward universal coverage, including the Medicare for All Act.

All Means ALL: Centering Racial Equity in Medicare For All
The overwhelming majority (59%) of America’s uninsured are people of color. Several states and many cities are already “majority minority.” We need our health care system to make racial equity a cornerstone, not an afterthought or vanity project. That remodeling begins with how and we advocate and communicate about Medicare For All. This talk establishes racial equity as a central focus and offers new paths for dialogue and movement growth.

HMOs, PPOs, ACOs, EIEIOs - How Managed Care Hogged the Spotlight of Healthcare Reform
For half a century, the US has been steeped in incremental, market-driven “reforms” of our healthcare system that simply don’t work.  Why don’t they work?  Because we insist on treating healthcare like a commodity using a business model format.  These failed solutions continue to permeate the healthcare reform debate to this day.  The false claims of efficiency and effectiveness in these market-based solutions needs to be exposed.  Understanding how we got to where we are is critically important to our fight for single payer.

Movement Building Case Studies from around the World: Lessons for our fight to win Medicare for All
Our fight to win Medicare for All cannot be fought solely on legislative terrain. We will need the passage of legislation to get us over the finish line, but we must also have a head on fight with the economic and political forces amassed against us. Medicare for All would take an entire fifth of our economy away from the insurance and pharmaceutical industries and give it back to everyday people in the form of universal health care. Abolition was the last time a social movement so radically transformed the US economy. In other parts of the world there have been more recent successful struggles for the protection or restoration of public goods. This panel examines six case studies, from across the globe, of social movements taking on various forms of injustice and privatization. From Chile to Ireland, from Bolivia to South Africa, from Britain to Canada, these struggles have valuable lessons for us now that we can use in our fight for healthcare justice.

Going to the Ballot for Single-Payer
Over the last three decades, activists have sought to establish state single-payer through the ballot initiative process in a variety of states, so far without success. This workshop explores the elements of single-payer ballot campaigns and the challenge of winning them. In particular, we will consider how policy, legal requirements, qualifying for the ballot, fundraising, and especially the character of the coalition and effectiveness of the opposition influence the outcomes. The premise of any campaign has to be there is no shortcut, no substitute for the deep organizing that moves people to action.

Building Support for Medicare for All by Taking it Off the Books
Click here to access the "Taking Healthcare Off the Books" toolkit!

Accounting principles are often seen as politically neutral collections of credits and debits. In fact, they are contested terrain that can have a huge impact on the distribution of wealth and power in the real world. In 1990, the Federal Accounting Standards Board (FASB) issued a new rule to require private sector employers to list the cost of future retirement healthcare as a liability on their financial statements. In 2008, these requirements were extended to the public sector by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). These rules have led to devastating attacks on retiree health and welfare benefits and have placed additional strain on public sector budgets. This session will explain the impact of these FASB/GASB standards.

Participants will learn how to find this GASB liability in publicly available documents and use it to build support for single payer in your state.

Care Over Cost: Organizing people who hate their private insurance
All we need to organize people who have health insurance through a private carrier to support Medicare for All. . Tens of millions of people with private health insurance get harmed by their insurance company every year. Their insurance company forces them to pay too much through deductibles, premiums, co-pays, or out of network costs that are too high. Or their insurance company denies them care they need to get healthy. At the same time, the majority of people with private health insurance say they like it. Why? Because they haven't gotten hurt or sick enough to see the failings of the private health insurance model. People's Action and our member organizations from New Hampshire to Alabama are organizing people who have private health insurance to 1) get them immediate relief where they had anclaim denied illegitimately 2) build an expanded base for Medicare for All 3) show people with private insurance that it doesn't work - the companies aren't on their side. We are also working with allies to stop politicians from taking industry money. Learn about this strategy and how you can challenge the private health insurance companies at this Care Over Cost workshop!

Medicare para Todos: Reaching Out to Monolingual Spanish Communities
Medicare for All will fundamentally transform our health care system for everyone – however, it has the potential to do so most significantly for people of color. As the majority minority population, the Latinx community is poised to be a significant force within the Medicare for All movement. To win, ours must be a multi-generational, multi-language movement, beginning with Spanish as the second most spoken language in the country. The Medicare para Todos workshop will discuss the bridges needed for Latinx and other people of color to bring these communities more centrally in our fight to win Medicare for All.

Using the Story of Self in the Campaign to Win Medicare for All
A personal story is an effective tool often used in organizing. When we tell our personal stories we draw on our own life experiences to explain why we are called to be part of a movement for change. Our story can connect us with whomever we are talking to and inspire them to join us in the movement. In this workshop we will go over the importance of “Story of Self” in organizing as well as how to engage your own personal story to encourage new activists to take action in the Medicare for All movement.

Winning Municipal Resolutions in Support of Medicare for All
What can a municipal resolutions campaign do to build a robust local movement for Medicare for All in your part of the country? In this workshop, we will learn about the exciting coalition effort to pass local resolutions in blue, red, and purple districts from coast to coast and share tools and ideas.
This session will feature organizers from Medicare for All Connecticut who built a broad and diverse coalition of activist and community organizations that led to a unanimous victory in New Haven, CT. We will address key challenges in building local coalitions and present a set of tools that a small team of activists can use to bring an impressive list of new allies into the fight for Medicare for All.

Forging Strategic Partnerships with Broader, Multiracial Movements
From fights with drug and hospital companies to workers' rights, racial justice and climate justice, our fight for state and federal Medicare for All is connected to many larger struggles, and we need each other to win. But it's one thing to say our struggles are connected: it's much harder to build true common cause and strategic alignment. What are some of the common challenges that come up when we try to deepen relationships and collaboration across movements? What specific strategies and tactics are people finding successful? In this session, we'll hear how organizers in California, New York and Pennsylvania are working coalitionally across lines of race, nationality and immigration status to position themselves as the health justice wing of a broader multiracial movement. We'll use either small group discussions or a big-group Q&A to give everyone a chance to ask questions and workshop challenges together.
